I’ve always enjoy doing black and white photography, sometimes I like to get super deep rich black and sometimes I just like a lighter version of it, a little bit softer black and white or some people might called it as a shade of grey. Some people have asked me, what make good black and white picture, for me it is not an easy answer. It is personal and base on individual preference, we can choose whether we like super deep rich black and white or just a shade of grey.
I think there are two type of a people who view a photograph, one who just like to enjoy the content of the picture, who enjoy or appreciate the story of the picture regardless of the composition, lighting, colors or the tone of the picture and the other one who view it from artistic viewpoint, they like to judge a picture base on it’s composition, the tone of the picture, lighting and all kind of thing, for this type of a person, no picture can make them happy since they like to scrutinize each and every pixels in the frame up until the “fringe” of each pixels.
Since this is a Photographer Blog, you are free to judge if that is what you like to do but if you come here just to enjoy the picture, you are welcome, I welcome each and everyone here. Since the title of this blog post is about black and white, I will stick into that. I personally think that there is no right or wrong when doing black and white picture. Like I said before we can have a shade of grey or we can have super deep rich black and white, it’s a personal preference. I can do both, if you have visit my flickr stream, you will notice that I’ve done quite a lot of deep rich black and white photograph especially for my son picture HaiQal. I know how to do it and now I know that there is more to black and white than a solid rich black and white.
Nowadays when t comes to editing I will do it base on my feels rather that what look good in my eyes, sometimes it may look great in my eyes but the feeling is not there, something like that. It is a subjective matter and for me there is no point wasting our times discussing about this matter, just what we feels right since it is impossible for us to satisfy anyone and why should we unless off-course you are doing a photo shoot for your client, then you need to listen to their point of view, need s and requirement, but on the other hand if you do it for yourself, just listen to your heart.
