Wide angle lens is really not an ideal portrait lens, normally photographer will use a focal length range from 85 mm to 135 mm for a portrait lens or longer, this is because a longer focal length will give a flattering look to the portrait compared to a slight distortion if it were taken with wide angle lens such as with this Fujifilm X100T camera which have a fixed focal length of 23 mm or equivalent of 35 mm in full frame camera.
Anyway sometimes a wide angle lens such as 35 mm range is great for an environmental portrait photography, even with wide aperture such as f/2 or f/2.8 we are still can show some little background information. The only problem is that, you need to get really close to your subject in order for them to fills the frame, that’s also one of the reason why a portrait lens range from 85 mm and above is ideal because it will give you an ideal working distance with your subject, so that they will be at ease in-front of the camera.
Before this my favourite portrait lens is 50 mm and it is still my favourite lens but sometimes I like to experiment with a different focal length and I like using Fujifilm X100T camera because it was quite easy to use compared to professional DSLR and they also less intimidating compared to the bigger camera.
Photographing little children will never be easy and even the photographs above looks so easy to capture, the truth is they hardly can sit there together for more than a minute, I’ve to take them and make them sitting together for quite a number of times until I get the shot that I really want. They look so happy together but the fact is, Raphael big brother is the one who always make my little Arianna cried.
