Before there were Petronas Twin Tower and Kuala Lumpur Tower, this place, better known as “Dataran Merdeka” among locals, or Merdeka Square was among the top attraction in Kuala Lumpur, visiting Kuala Lumpur won’t be complete without a quick stopover here. Merdeka Square is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight (time: 12:00 AM) on 31 August 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the usual venue for the annual Merdeka Parade (National Day Parade).
I still remember the very first time I get my first SLR which is Nikon FM2 black body, this is among the most photographs subject for my camera here in Kuala Lumpur, at that time there was a quite huge tree on the left side of the picture, at the front end of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building there, maybe because of security reason the tree has been chopped off, there is a lot of event took place here and maybe the authority doesn’t want anything bad happen or maybe simply because the huge tree blocking some view there.
Anyway I’ve always wanted to do some kind of panoramic shot there, but even though I can use my DSLR and take few shot and combine it or stitching it with Photoshop, it is quite cumbersome to do. The photograph above were taken with my Fujifilm X100T camera using the Panoramic Mode, I’ve to make quite a few shot to get things right, this one is not perfect either but the most important thing for me at the moment is just wanted to share with you guys, one sweeping shot of Kuala Lumpur from Merdeka Square.
The problem with the panoramic shot is that it look small in the computer screen or internet due to the nature of the shot, I think panoramic shot work best for exhibition, where you can printed it big for everyone t see everything in great details. For those of you who have a camera or a smartphone with a panoramic mode, why don’t you give it a try, you might like it or hate it but give them a try. It may not work for every subject but you will never know which one will work and which one doesn’t. A little bit info here, I’m doing my panoramic shot with my Fujifilm X100T camera while handholding the camera in a vertical format, because I need an extra space for the bottom and top of the building. Maybe next time I will be using a tripod for more well controlled shot.
