“A photograph never grows old. You and I change, people change all through the months and years but a photograph always remains the same. How nice to look at a photograph of mother or father taken many years ago. You see them as you remember them. But as people live on, they change completely. That is why I think a photograph can be kind.”
– Albert Einstein –
This is my fourth photo book for my family (more than 100 pages) but this is the first time that I’m using Artifact Uprising , previously all my photo books were made with BLURB . Overall I’m quite happy with Artifact Uprising but in term of book making procedure, I like Blurb better because they have stand alone program where you can download it and you can do it off-line whereby you need to be online in order to make a photo book with Artifact Uprising and then in term of layout, Blurb offer more but that wasn’t my concern because I just wanted simple layout, just one or two photo per page, I don’t like having so many pictures in one page.
Some people have asked me about the quality, actually you really need to try it out yourself, make some small photobook from different company and only then you can tell, it is almost impossible to judge the quality of the prints just merely comparing them side by side from different company just by looking at your computer screen. You can hardly tell.
You need to print it out, feel the paper, feel the texture on the paper, feel the thickness of it and so on and so forth. Just keep in mind that the type of paper that they used to print this photo book will not be the same as photographic paper, it is just the same or much better than what you can get from a coffee table book at the bookshop. Another things is, most photographic paper prints are single-sided, while press prints are double-sided.
In term of sharpness and contrast, nothing will beat photographic paper. If you wanted to get an idea on how it will turn out, just head to your nearest bookshop, pick a hard cover copy of National Geographic book or any photography book and looks inside, that’s how it will look like but most company which provide photo book options will use better paper, thicker, or premium paper than what coffee table book use in a bookshop.
I know that, a lot of people wanted to make a photo book or coffee table book for their photos, whether it is a collection of their street photography, landscape, portrait or family trips, the problem is, most people procrastinate, as the years goes by and their collection of photographs become thousand or hundreds of thousands and they keep it on a separate hard disk and sometimes they were hardly open.
Anyway, there is no point for me writing long article about why you must print out your photographs especially your personal or family photographs because I believe there were hundreds of article about it online. If you want to do it, just do it, stop everything and concentrate, just make it happen. If you need a jump start to make things happen, I would suggest you to get this book titled Making Ideas Happen : Overcoming the Obstacles Between Vision and Reality by Scott Belsky.
If you need to find out about the cost, price per page, shipping cost, book size, most photo book online provider will have details about it. There are plenty of online photo book provider to choose from, for Malaysian most people will prefer Photobook Malaysia . Actually it doesn’t really matter which company you choose, just make something with your photographs. Holding a printed memory in your hand will never be the same as looking at a computer screen. Anyway the choice is yours, it’s your photographs, it’s your memory.
