“In portrait photography, communication is often a must. Some people simply won’t agree to be photographed without knowing our intentions; even those that agree will usually feel more comfortable with some level of interaction. A comfortable person in front of the camera almost always leads to a more natural looking portrait.”

– Mitchell Kanashkevich –

Mitchell Kanashkevich is among the few of travel photographers that I like, I like his style and I like his writing as well and this time around Mitchell gave us free eBook about how you can get a natural looking travel portraits. With years of experience travel the world, Mitchell does produced great portrait photography and he is kind enough to share with us some of his secrets.

Among the seven tips that he share with us to get a natural looking travel portraits is:

  1. Interact and communicate
  2. Be a fly on the wall
  3. Be an observer of people
  4. Frame out awkward body language and get up close
  5. Photograph your subjects doing something familiar to them
  6. Photograph when the subject is looking away from the camera
  7. Photograph “pose” after the pose

After reading the ebook, you will realise that when it comes to people photography, it is not really about camera, it is not really about the choice of lens, it is really about “people” how you approach them will make or break your picture. I like to end this post with this quote :

“If the photographer is interested in the people in front of his lens, and if he is compassionate, it’s already a lot. The instrument is not the camera but the photographer.”
