Newborn | Window Light Photography

For those of you who have been following my blog for all this while knows that, I’m a big fan of natural light photography. Most of my children pictures were taken with natural light, I rarely use flash and in fact I don’t even have a flash on my own. This photographs were taken at the hospital, just few hows before my wife and daughter being discharge.
Before this they were located at the middle of the room or ward, so there is no window light but later on they were transferred to this area, next to the window and I can’t be more than happy. I just have few minutes “photography” session here, because I don’t want the nurse checking us out on why we took so long to get ready going back home, before this I was busy talking to an uncle who came visiting his newborn granddaughter just in front of my wife bed. I don’t think it is polite to close my wife bed curtain and do “my stuff”. So I spend few minutes talking to him and after he left, then only I quickly do my photography.
Anyway the lighting outside was a little bit soft, I need to increase my ISO to 800 so that I will get faster shutter speed to freeze the action because I’m using 50mm and set the aperture to f/2, if the shutter was slow, the possibility of getting a blurry photograph due to camera shake is high, so I need to get a fast shutter speed and I can only get that by increasing the ISO.
Sometimes you don’t need to have an expensive flash or lighting equipment to get a great lighting, window light can be your best friend but the downside is that, it is not available all the time, unlike using flash, you set it up at any time of the day including midnight. You can only be able to use window light during broad daylight, so you must be quick because sometimes the lighting can change quickly but the result can be dramatic.
If you have never use window light before, just give it a try, try to shoot from your bedroom, from your kitchen, from anywhere in the house where you can get closer to the window and don’t be afraid to increase the ISO, 400, 800 or even 2000. Most new DSLR today can produce great result at such ISO with little noticeable Noise and sometimes a little bit of grain or “noise” can add drama or mood to your photograph.

The photograph above is also taken with window light at the same hospital, my first son, HaiQal is just three days old then. Once again, give window light a try, especially for a newborn, window light or natural lighting photography work best for them.
