Children photography can be tough, it can be hard and never will be easy especially when it comes to photographing our very own child. Those who have a child on their own will surely know what I mean. Even though my son were get used being photograph since he was still a baby, it is never easy for me because he already knows every tricks that I use to get him sit or pause for a moment in front of the camera. I need to work really hard in order for me to get him stick for a while in front of the camera, so that I can shoot his picture.

Among the tips that I use to get him stick for a moment is to get him something to hold, something to play with, let him play around with his toy for a while, keep on following him and for sure I will get something interesting to freeze. In this case I let my son play with the tree branch that can easily be found at the garden, at the Lake Garden here in Kuala Lumpur where I took this photograph.

Most of the times a toys will do but for this outing, we didn’t bring any toy here, I jut want my son to be happy running around and when he find something interesting, those things can be a toy for him. Child have a great imagination, at one time a tree branch can become a weapon, can become a sword to him at at the other time it can become a microphone where my son would sing along mimicking a rock star on the stage.

It can be tiresome, following him around but I think it is a good exercise for me and my wife since I rarely do any physical exercise other than walking with my son at the garden. I took this shot with just 50mm lens, so I really need to get closer o him to take his photograph. I don’t like to use to use a long lens when taking a picture of my son, I want my presence to be felt, I want to get close to my son and for security reason also. I don’t want to be really far from my son in a crowded place like at the garden. That’s why I choose to use 50mm lens, so that I can shoot at a close distance. If anything happen to my son, falling down for an example, I was close enough to give a helping hand.

Once again, the tips is to let your child play around, let themselves be themselves, let themselves enjoy their childhood lives. Taking picture of a child is not all about cute looking face but most importantly to document his character, personality, to captured his enjoyment, expressiveness without being too interrupted with their joyfulness. Taking a photograph of a child will never be easy but it is nevertheless rewarding. Without a photograph, a beautiful moment will fade or vanished from our mind but with a photograph, we can enjoy the fleeting moment forever.
