Candid photography usually refer to unplanned or unposed shot and usually when we talk about candid moment, we refer it to people photography, even though it can be anything, animal at the zoo suddenly jumping over the bridge for an example. What make candid moment so special is because most of the times it only happen once, even though sometimes we try to “staged” it for a second time, the moment will not be the same. Nowadays especially in wedding or portrait photography, people like to “staged” their candid moment, I mean a photographer act like a film director, direct their subject to act like this or like that in front of the camera like there is no camera in front of them, some people can act naturally while others might find it hard to act in front of the camera especially those shy kind of a person.
This is also a staged shot at first but the moment recorded above is truly a candid moment. I mean at first I try to get the model to pose with the horse, make rapport with the horse since his is the first time that the model posing with the horse, when the model was ready to pose with the horse, suddenly the horse moved its head and as you can see the model quite surprise by the sudden movement of the horse and trying to distance herself a bit from the horse.
A moment like this really make the picture special because it’s pure candid, but it’s not a pure luck actually because I was always ready from the beginning, from the moment the model build rapport with horse, I keep on shooting, I didn’t wait until the pose was right and shoot but I kept on shooting right from the start. Normal static pose would be boring sometimes but a moment like this really fun to look at.
Sometimes we need to anticipate what might happens during a photo shoot and be ever ready for it, we must be very quick because pure candid moment won’t wait for you. Among the reason why I like photographing my son so much is because of pure candid moment. A child like my son age ( he is three years old at the time of writing ) doesn’t know how to pose, he is busy playing, busy with their own world, even though I try to pose him sometimes but it never last a minute, he will never stand still and wait for me, I need to chase him with the camera in order to photograph him. Candid moment is really what makes a picture so special.
