Some people will call this as Environmental Portrait Photography, while others people like to called it as On Location Portraiture, where you shoot your subject at the location, preferred by you or your subject instead of in the studio. Among the advantage of shooting on location is that your subject can relax, play around maybe if it was a child or just simply hanging around. Among other main disadvantage for on location portrait photography is the weather and the lighting, you can’t control the weather and you can’t control the lighting, unless you want to use flash on location, but it was trouble some to set up and definitely will attract passers go by.
I’ve taken a lot of close up shot of my son, mostly head and shoulder and I think it will be great addition to my family album if I can include some background to the picture, the place that we have been, the place that my son is busy playing, so that my picture have something to tell. A story to tell, where my son is playing, the background, the location and a lot of other things within the single frame can tell a story.
In the picture above I use UWA or Ultra Wide Angle Lens 10-20mm to photograph my son playing at KLCC or Kuala Lumpur City Centre Children Playground. The reason why I choose to use the Ultra Wide Angle Lens for this shot is because I want to include the tall building behind, one of Malaysia famous landmark which is the Petronas Twin Tower.
This place is very crowded with childrens during the weekend and public holiday, it is a safe place for children’s to play around and because of it’s location close to the Petronas Twin Tower where we have Suria KLCC shopping complex there, parents can bring their children to the shopping complex to have lunch or dinner afterwards. There is also large children pool area to play around too and the best thing is, if you like photography, you will love the background, which is the Petronas Twin Tower, Malaysia most famous landmark.
On location portrait photography really has it’s place, it’s give context to the subject being photograph and the best thing that we can do if we want to shoot environmental portrait photography is to choose a location or environment that have something to to do or related with the subject. For an example if your subject is a book reader, or book worm, why don’t try to photograph him or her at the library or bookstore, or if that is not possible, just photograph him outside the bookstore where we still can see the bookstore or bookshop signage. If our subject is an athlete, why don’t we try to photograph him or her at the track in the stadium wearing full sports suit, I think this is much better than a studio photograph even though studio has it’s place. Just mix around, studio and on location photography and you will have a great portfolio for your clients, but in my case I am happy photographing my family on location.
