Ever since our son HaiQal was born, my interest in photography goes towards him, I mean I really enjoy taking picture of him more than anything else. I’m a full time working photographer with the Government of Malaysia and my job require me to photographs all kind of things, from politics side, economy side and most of them involved person or personality but none of them are more important than my own family, yes I do that job to brings foods on the table, I’m proud of my job but nevertheless my family picture is still my top priority when I’m not working, in fact I take this shot before I went to Malacca for my official assignment.
A child like my son age, he is three years old by the way, growing up faster than we can captured them on camera. My son is no longer a baby but to me, he is still our baby, he is still our cute little baby. Nowadays it is very hard for me to get my son to look straight into the lens, for this shot I’ve wait patiently for him to look at the lens but after many attempt, doing all kind of stupid jokes or action, my son won’t budge, he keep looking everywhere but my lens camera.
Normally I take a picture of my son with 50mm lens but for this shot I use 70-200mm telephoto lens and shoot from quite a distance hoping not to distract my son too much. I believe in portrait photography we don’t necessarily need to captured a beautiful smiling face of a person looking directly at the camera but more importantly to captured his or her true self, to captured a person character, to captured as they are and among the greatest advantage of photographing a child like my son age is that, it’s pure candid, my son don’t know how to pose, he just being himself, playing and running here and there and sometimes crying out loud when he doesn’t get the things he want like getting a new toy for an example.
Few of my friends have asked me to share with them tips about photographing a child, I don’t know whether I’ve a tips to share or not but just take a lot of pictures and let your child be a child, let them play, let them run and always be ready with the camera at hand, you never know when your child will make an interesting pose, always talk to them when play with them, and you must also be quick with the camera because you know that your child is faster than you. His reaction is faster than we can imagine. They are unpredictable creature and that makes them an interesting and challenging subject to photographed.
