Sunrise | My Hometown

Sunrise | Hometown

© 2006  Wazari Wazir | Sunrise | Sabah | Malaysia North Borneo

This photograph may seem like unreal or maybe surreal, but the truth is, it is real photograph, taken in 2006 at my wife hometown in Kuala Penyu Sabah, my wife hometown is my hometown also. There was a paddy field in the foreground but because I want to concentrate on the sunrise, I’ve to underexpose this picture a bit in order to get a rich sunrise tone and leaving the paddy field in dark area and can’t be seen in this photograph, but it was there in the shadow area.

My hometown is rustic, tranquil, beautiful, very quiet, far away from hustling and bustling of big city life, it took two hours journey from Kota Kinabalu Sabah to reach my wife hometown.  It was a long journey but time is relative when you enjoy the journey. This coming Eid-ulFitr 2010, I’m not coming to this beautiful hometown but will spent it here in Kuala Lumpur. I took this photograph not too far from my wife home, very near actually, less than a minute walk to get to this paddy field.

If the weather was clear in the morning we can see clearly Mount Kinabalu from this location, it may be small but can easily be recognize. Mount Kinabalu is four hour journey from Kuala Penyu which is located in southern part of Sabah. Time seem to stood still here in this small village, people know each other here, they know their neighbors very well, in fact, they just like relative towards each other, very close among each other.

I was born in Perak but grew up in Kuala Lumpur, my family move here in Kuala Lumpur since I was very small, I really miss my “kampung” or my hometown in Perak but I guess I was lucky enough to married my wife even though we are separated by South China Sea. Most of the times when we come back to my wife hometown in Sabah, it feels more like a vacation than “coming home”. Sabah is huge and beautiful and whenever we come back here, I try to explore some other part of Sabah that I’ve never been to, but if I just want to unwind, I don’t need to go any further, just sitting at the verandah of my father-in-law house and watching the sunset will do. Life was easy, life was simple, there is nothing more that I could ever ask.

To all my friends who will be celebrating Eid-ulFitr with their family, be it in Kuala Lumpur or together with their family in their hometown, I would like to wish Happy Eid-ulFitr, have a safe journey back home and if you are photographers, take plenty of pictures, bring back the joy and share it with those who have never been there.
